Religion:
We are learning how we are connected to God. We study the Sacraments and God's love for us. We also do a study of the Rosary and continue to study the mysteries throughout the year. The students are learning why involvement in the mass and sharing their faith can be meaningful ways to come closer to God. We also discuss our talents and how God's gifts are to be shared throughout our lives. We are the church and each of us can build it up.

Math:
Multiplication and division basic facts take up most of our first semester. Addition and subtraction are reviewed as well. These basic operations are used throughout life and are important to commit to memory. The students work on geometry and story problems. Most of the math done in the real world is in the form of a story problem, so we give the students a lot of practice including comparison problems. We also learn more about time, money, measurement, and many other elements of math throughout the year. Math is a life skill and the students are working hard to master it.

Phonics:
The units are full of the sounds of our language and the patterns to spell them. Long, short, diphthongs, digraphs, and regular vowel pairs are conquered. Suffix, prefix, and r-controlled vowels are vanquished. Syllables are counted, blends and clusters are written, and finally, antonyms, synonyms, and homonyms are compared. The students will recognize the patterns that make up the words of our language thus enabling them to write and speak with confidence.

English:
The students work with paragraph writing, sentence structure, adjectives, adverbs, and sharing details. These skills are then all being incorporated into the writing process. The students are using the skills acquired to complete writing projects. Some of these are creative, while others are structured reports, articles, or personal narratives. Students also will be reading and working with a Novel. Writing and Reading skills will be combined for the activities planned.

Reading:
Reading is a life long skill and we hope to encourage the students to read because they love it! The first step is to help the students understand what they read. To do this, we use reciprocal reading techniques. They encourage the students to predict, question, clarify, and summarize what they are reading as they read it. The students are also studying dictionary use, reading skills, and writing paragraphs. They are learning about the Setting, Characters, Plot, and Big Problems in stories. Learning about author's purpose, inferences, cause and effect, and fact or opinion challenges us, but we are working and learning to become better readers.

Social Studies:
The students start by learning some basic Geography terms and skills. After this we move to learning about communities and how they work together to grow and change for the better of all that live there. Mixed in with this are lessons on citizenship and the responsibilities of a good citizen in society.

Science:
The universe is ours to study. Yet, we could study our own Earth and its environments forever and still not understand all the complexities God has woven together. However, in third grade we are making an effort to learn as much about it as we can. The plants, animals, and habitats in an ecosystem work together to survive and provide shelter, food, and water for all its inhabitants. God has created a wonderful balance that threads through ecosystems, land masses, water cycles, and mechanisms. There is so much more to learn and study as people continue to explore the vastness of our universe.

Spelling:
Each unit brings with it new words and new spelling strategies. The students learn to use these to enhance their knowledge of the language they speak and write. Encourage your child to visit Spelling City to practice the new list each week.
